How to take classes at a community college while enrolled at a four-year college

Students who are already enrolled at a four-year college may be able to take additional courses at a community college. Depending on your school, this may be called concurrent enrollment, cross-enrollment, or dual enrollment.

Get transfer approval before registering Confirm the course applies to your degree

Before you enroll

Confirm permission, transferability, prerequisites, and a manageable credit load.

Steps 1–6
1

Review your college’s concurrent-enrollment policy

Check your four-year college’s policies regarding courses taken at another institution. Some colleges require a permission form before you register elsewhere. You may need approval from:

  • Your academic advisor
  • Your department chair
  • The registrar
  • The financial aid office
  • An international student advisor, if applicable
2

Find an equivalent community college course using Univyze

In Degree Planner → Dual Enrollment, select the transfer school—the community college you plan to attend—then enter the course subject code and/or number you need. Click Search, and Univyze will display equivalent course options.

3

Meet with your academic advisor

Before registering, ask your academic advisor at your four-year college to confirm:

  • You are allowed to attend both colleges at the same time
  • The community college course will transfer
  • Whether you need written approval before enrolling
Do not assume a course will transfer simply because the course titles are similar.
4

Apply to the community college

Complete the community college’s admissions application process. Admission to the college does not always guarantee a seat in a specific course.

5

Complete placement and prerequisite requirements

Some classes require prerequisite courses, placement scores, or instructor approval. Send the community college any required transcripts or test scores so it can clear the prerequisite before class registration, if needed.

Request clearance early. Do not wait until registration begins; community colleges usually need a few days to process these requests.
6

Review your total credit load

Add together the credits you will take at both colleges. For example, 12 credits at your four-year college plus 3 credits at a community college equals a total academic load of 15 credits.

Consider:

  • Your four-year college’s academic-load limits for the term; check with your advisor
  • Travel time to and from the community college, unless it offers online courses
  • Overlapping class meetings
  • Different academic calendars
  • Exam schedules
  • Work responsibilities
  • The amount of weekly study time required
Receiving permission to take a course does not mean that an overload is academically advisable.

Register and stay on track

Use the correct section, meet every deadline, and manage both academic calendars.

Steps 7–9
7

Register and pay the community college

After receiving the necessary approvals:

  1. Register for the approved course.
  2. Confirm that you enrolled in the correct section.
  3. Pay tuition and fees by the deadline.
  4. Purchase required books and materials.
  5. Review the community college’s drop, withdrawal, and refund deadlines.
The community college may use different registration and payment deadlines than your four-year college.
8

Monitor schedule and exam conflicts

Compare the calendars for both institutions. Pay particular attention to:

  • First and last days of class
  • Holidays and breaks
  • Midterm dates
  • Final exam dates
  • Withdrawal deadlines
  • Required in-person meetings
9

Complete the course successfully

Attend class, complete all coursework, and follow the community college’s academic policies.

A low or failing grade may affect:

  • Transfer eligibility
  • Admission to your major
  • Financial aid eligibility
  • Graduate or professional school applications
  • Your academic standing at the community college

Transfer the credit

Send the final record and verify that the course was applied correctly.

Step 10
10

Send an official transcript

After final grades are posted, request an official community college transcript to be sent directly to the registrar at your four-year college.

  • Confirm that the transcript was received
  • Check that the course appears on your academic record
  • Verify that it was applied to the correct degree requirement
  • Contact your advisor or registrar if the credit was posted incorrectly
Keep copies of the course syllabus, approval form, final grade, and transcript-request confirmation.

Effective date: December 30, 2025 • Last updated: December 30, 2025

1) Agreement to These Terms

These Referrals & Deals Terms of Service (the “Referrals Terms”) govern your access to and participation in the Univyze referrals, rewards, deals marketplace, and related promotional programs (collectively, the “Program”). By accessing or participating in the Program, you agree to be bound by these Referrals Terms and any other terms incorporated by reference, including Univyze’s general Terms and Privacy Policy (together with these Referrals Terms, the “Agreement”).

2) Eligibility

  • You must be able to form a legally binding contract to participate.
  • You must comply with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Univyze may refuse participation, suspend access, or terminate your participation at any time for any reason.

3) How Referrals Work

  • Your referral link is unique to your account. You are responsible for all activity conducted through your link.
  • A “referral” is counted only when the referred individual meets Univyze’s tracking and qualification criteria (e.g., valid sign-up, non-fraudulent activity, and any threshold requirements shown in your dashboard).
  • Referrals may be reversed if Univyze determines the referral was invalid, fraudulent, canceled, refunded, chargebacked, duplicated, or otherwise non-qualifying.

4) Rewards, Deals, and Redemption

  • Rewards/deals (including thresholds, availability, and redemption methods) are shown in your dashboard and may change.
  • Rewards have no cash value unless Univyze explicitly states otherwise in writing.
  • Univyze may substitute a reward of equal or greater value, modify redemption steps, or discontinue any reward at any time.
  • You are solely responsible for any taxes, reporting, or obligations arising from rewards you receive.

5) Prohibited Conduct

You agree you will not:

  • Use spam, unsolicited messages, robocalls, automated scripts, bots, or bulk distribution to promote your referral link.
  • Misrepresent Univyze, the Program, or the terms of any reward/deal.
  • Create multiple accounts, self-refer, or otherwise manipulate tracking.
  • Engage in fraud, abuse, chargeback schemes, or any activity Univyze reasonably deems suspicious or harmful.
  • Violate any third-party rights (including privacy, publicity, copyright, or trademark).

6) Video Reviews & User Content — Ownership and Rights

If you submit, upload, or otherwise provide a video review, testimonial, recording, image, text, or any other content in connection with the Program (“User Content”), you agree to the following:

  • Assignment of rights: You hereby irrevocably assign to Univyze all right, title, and interest worldwide in and to your User Content, including all intellectual property rights, publicity rights, and any other proprietary rights, to the maximum extent permitted by law.
  • Marketing use: Univyze may use, reproduce, edit, adapt, translate, distribute, publicly perform, publicly display, publish, create derivative works from, and otherwise exploit your User Content for marketing, advertising, promotional, commercial, and any other business purposes, in any media now known or later developed, worldwide, in perpetuity, without additional notice or compensation.
  • Waiver of claims: You waive (to the maximum extent permitted by law) any moral rights and any right to inspect/approve uses of User Content, and you release Univyze from any claims arising from Univyze’s use of User Content (including claims for invasion of privacy, right of publicity, defamation, or compensation).
  • Representations: You represent and warrant that you own or have secured all rights necessary to grant the rights above, and that your User Content does not violate any law or third-party rights.

9) Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Univyze from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising out of or related to: (a) your participation in the Program, (b) your violation of this Agreement, (c) your User Content, or (d) your violation of any law or third-party rights.

10) Suspension, Termination, and Changes

  • Univyze may suspend or terminate your access to the Program at any time, for any reason, including suspected abuse or fraud.
  • Univyze may modify or discontinue the Program, any reward, and/or these Referrals Terms at any time.

Frequently asked questions
Before you submit a ticket, review these common questions. Many issues can be resolved in a few steps.
How do I update my major, minor, or double major?

You can update your academic information directly in your profile:

  • Open the Profile or Settings page.
  • Locate the section for Major / Minor / Double Major.
  • Adjust your information and save your changes.

After you save, your degree plan and requirements will refresh automatically. If your program is missing or something looks incorrect, submit a ticket with your current major and catalog year.

My requirements don’t look correct. What should I check first?

If your requirements appear off, start with these steps:

  • Confirm that your major and any minors/double majors are accurate in your profile.
  • Verify that your catalog year (the academic year you’re following) is correct, if shown.
  • Refresh the page or regenerate your plan if that option is available.

If it still looks incorrect, submit a ticket and include a brief description (for example, “Course X should count for Requirement Y”). We’ll review and update it if needed.

How does the degree planner decide which classes go in each term?

The planner uses your remaining requirements and typical course sequencing to propose a schedule. It aims to:

  • Keep you on track for graduation by your target term.
  • Balance course load across terms where possible.
  • Respect basic prerequisites and recommended orderings.

You can still manually adjust courses between terms. Think of the plan as a structured starting point, not a final schedule.

Can I share my plan with my advisor or parents?

Yes. Depending on which features are enabled for your account, you may be able to:

  • Show them your plan directly from your device during a meeting.
  • Export a summary view (for example, as a PDF or CSV) if that option appears in your dashboard.

If you don’t see an export option but would find it helpful, submit a ticket and let us know how you’d like to share your plan. This helps us prioritize new features.

I found a bug or something isn’t working. How should I report it?

Please use the support ticket form at the top of this page and choose the topic “Bug or issue with the dashboard”. To help us resolve it quickly, include:

  • The page or feature you were using.
  • What you expected to happen.
  • What actually happened (including any error messages).
  • Your device and browser, if you know them.

Screenshots are also very helpful. You can reply to our confirmation email with attachments once your ticket is created.
